Three years after their debut, the Portland-based black metal duo Spirit Possession has just released their second album, Of The Sign…. The twosome, consisting of S. Peacock (of Ulthar) and A. Spungin (of Vouna), have incorporated handmade synth noise in their latest album, which features artwork by Luciana Lupe Vasconcelos.
Spirit Possession is known for its raw, erratic black heavy metal style that incorporates razor-thrashing guitars, blistering drum violence, commanding torturous vocals, and apocalyptic harsh noise. Their first album, Spirit Possession, was a testament to their singular style of raw schizophrenic angular spiraling black metal that drew inspiration from the classic era of heavy/black/thrash/death.
Of The Sign… features six schizo-spiraling, deranged hymns of black metal drenched in Spirit Possession’s epic, strange, and primitive ways. The album is a violent cacophony of insanity-laden cavern vocals, labyrinthian guitar trilling, scalding drum brutality, and analog harsh-noise eruptions. The result is a sinister yet adventurous black/heavy/death abomination from a forgotten age.
The band recorded Of The Sign… in the depths of the S•P Dungeon/Studio and was revamped, mixed, and mastered by Colin Marston. The album artwork comes from Luciana Lupe Vasconcelos, and Dan Fried did the design.
Overall, Of The Sign… is a must-listen for fans of raw, erratic black heavy metal. Spirit Possession’s incorporation of handmade synth noise adds an extra layer of complexity to their already unique style of music. The album is a violent and chaotic masterpiece that showcases the duo’s musical prowess and ability to push the boundaries of underground heavy metal.
