It certainly is a busy time in the PNW. As temperatures drop and the leaves begin to change, the onslaught of fall tours start to make their rounds. Here at Renegade, we want to highlight some of our favorite incoming shows and inspire you to go support them. Every month, we’ll share our top pick of concerts in and around Portland this month that we think you should consider.
This month, My Chemical Romance and Florence + The Machine play The Moda Center. Red Cube’s Bridge City Block Party brings Diplo to town, plus Ringo Starr, Dillon Francis, Spafford, and lots more!
Awesome Concerts in Portland this Month
My Chemical Romance & Taking Back Sunday
MCR is considered one of the most influential rock groups of the 2000s and a major player in the rise of pop-punk and emo. After COVID-caused cancellations of their 2020 tour dates, the band is back on the road, this time with pop-punk band Taking Back Sunday. The bands will kick off the month with a massive performance at The Moda Center.

Florence + The Machine
Florence + The Machine’s album Dance Fever explored lead singer Florence Welch’s fascination with Choreomania, a social phenomenon in early modern Europe that involved groups of people dancing uncontrollably and erratically. Widely praised for Welch’s songwriting abilities and powerful vocals, the band is currently touring to support the new album, including a stop at The Moda Center.

Lake Street Dive
Lake Street Dive is able to seamlessly incorporates R&B, pop, ’60s-era rock, and soul into a unique, dance-party-ready mix. The Brooklyn-based band’s latest album, Obviously, was the last to feature founding member and lead guitarist Mike Olson, but their high-energy live performances and air-tight musicianship are unlikely to disappear. They’ll play McMenamin’s Edgefield with Devon Gilfillian early in the month.

Diplo
Even if you’ve never heard the name Diplo, you’ve undoubtedly heard some of his music. This DJ/producer has worked on production projects with pop artists such as Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Madonna, Beyoncé, No Doubt, Justin Bieber, Usher, and Snoop Dogg nonetheless. He’ll be performing alongside Major League DJZ, Francis Mercier, Sidestep, and Eddie Pitzul at Red Cube’s Bridge City Block Party.

Atmosphere
Hailing from Minneapolis, the hip-hop duo known as Atmosphere has released 12 studio albums in its 25 years. The combination of rapper Slug’s allegorical lyrics and producer Ant’s innovative beats makes their live performances deeply uplifting and easy to rock out to.

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band
We’re under no impression that Ringo Starr needs an introduction from us. But the legendary Beatle happens to be stopping at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall this month. Performing with his “All Starr Band,” the supergroup currently features artists from successful bands like Men At Work, Toto, and Kansas.

Dillon Francis
Platinum-selling producer Dillon Francis is, without a doubt, one of the biggest personalities in EDM. From online antics with a piñata named Gerald to a German alter-ego who snobs over deep house music, Dillon is our favorite funny man. Luckily he also has the musical chops to back it all up. He’ll be performing at 45 East on October 13.

Paul Oakenfold
Paul Oakenfold is a legendary trance DJ and record producer from the UK. A three-time Grammy nominee and two-time “No. 1 DJ in the World,” he’s recently been on tour opening up for Pet Shop Boys and New Order. He’ll perform at 45 East with Gabriel Driscoll and Jairus Lance.

The Glitch Mob
“Stare the ego. Feed the soul.” Such is the ethos of industrial dance music trio The Glitch Mob. In 2014, the innovators debuted the custom-made instrument they call “The Blade.” The painted set piece houses lights, drum pads, and MIDI keyboards. This unique approach allows the LA-based group to perform electronic music “live” for enraptured audiences.

Alvvays
Canada’s indie pop superheroes Alvvays took the scene by storm with their debut self-titled album in 2014. Their follow-up, Antisocialities, won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year in 2018. A string of singles released early this fall preceded the group’s third studio album, Blue Rev, due this month.

Spafford
Jam fans will rejoice at Spafford’s two-day stint at The Get Down later this month. The American four-piece blends multiple genres of music like rock, funk, jazz, reggae, ska, and electro-pop. Known for their astonishing improvisational ability and off-the-cuff extended jams, fans can reliably expect two totally different sets for their two-night run on Oct 21 + 22.

TOKiMONSTA
Jennifer Lee, known professionally as TOKiMONSTA makes sultry instrumental hip-hop and electronica that demand attention. In 2019, her album Lune Rouge was nominated for “Best Dance / Electronic Album” at the Grammy Awards. Additionally, she’s done a number of official remixes, Duran Duran, Disclosure, Sia, the Netflix show Squid Game, and Odesza being just a few.

Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly Rae Jepsen’s prismatic take on pop has been the soundtrack to summer romances and blissful youth since 2012’s “Call Me Maybe.” More recent releases like her third album Emotion took inspiration from “classic pop” artists like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. Her upcoming performance at the Roseland is in support of her next studio album, The Loneliest Time.
